Studies on the wild Rhododendron fauriei for . rufescens in Korea (1)



Abstract
Rhododendron fauriei for. rufescens is of great importance for the development of garden tree. R. fauriei for. rufescense which is naturally grown over the area of Seolak and Daeam mountain is very ornamental and is characterized as a shadow tolerant plant. The fact that a lot of seeds of R. fauriei for. rufescens are readily obtained became the cause of the experiment of propagation by seed.
The present experiment was carried out to know the germination ability for the effective propagation.
The results are obtained as follows:
1. The optimum temperature for seed germination of R. fauriei for. rufescense might be thought 20¡É.
2. The rate of seed germination varied with the storage of seed. The highest rate in seed germination was found when seeds were exposed to the temperature of 5¡É in desiccator storage.
3. The rate of seed germination decreased when the seeds were washed in water for a long period of time.
4. Among the thiourea treatments, one percent level gave the highest rate of seed germination when treated for 24 hours.
5. The effect of gibberellin on seed germination was apparent in the early stage of germination but not in the late stage.
6. IBA had a remarkable effect on the seed germination irrespective of concentration and duration of the treatment, whereas no significant effects were found with the treatment of NAA and IAA.
7. In the plots of IAA and GA treatment kept in darkness, few of the seed germination were seen in the treatment with IAA, while there was fifty percent of seed germination with the treatment of GA.
